Protesters nationwide hold ‘No Kings’ rallies amid government shutdown

Significant crowds were seen in major cities such as New York City and Washington D.C. and even London on Saturday during the second “No to Kings” protest against the Trump administration since June.

While some leaders feared the marches could turn violent, there were no reports of violence or arrests at the afternoon rallies due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Republicans argued that the protests were merely an effort to distract from the current government shutdown fight and appease their base.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told FOX Business he hoped Democratic leaders involved in the demonstrations would be more willing to accept the GOP’s plan after the demonstrations are over, but he didn’t sound overly optimistic.

In New York City on Saturday, the NYPD issued an alert saying that the city had more than 100,000 people in attendance across all five boroughs and that they did not have to make a single “protest-related” arrest.

No arrests were reported in D.C., although some reports indicated that protesters briefly took to the streets.

Large gatherings were also held Saturday in other major cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon and Austin, but police said the demonstrations were largely peaceful.

Portland police have confirmed that at least three people have been detained following an alleged attack related to the “No to Kings” protests in the city centre.

According to the authorities, one person was arrested and sent to prison. The other two people were detained as part of an investigation conducted by Portland Police Bureau officers.

At least fifteen people were arrested by Illinois State Police near an ICE facility in Broadview outside Chicago.

In Denver, police said officers dispersed a small group to block access to the highway and several people were arrested.

There were also some arrests in small cities of various states.

Approximately 2,500 “No to Kings” protests were held Across the USA.

The tone of Saturday’s “No to Kings” protests was anti-Trump; because demonstrators were marching against what they saw as the president’s authoritarian policies.

Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote of X: “California will continue to peacefully resist the Trump Administration’s authoritarian takeover.”

“This is a Love America rally,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., speaking at the D.C. rally on Saturday, said in response to criticism from Johnson and others.

After his speech at the D.C. rally, Sanders thanked the “millions” of Americans who attended the meeting on Saturday.
