Public memorial for 702 ABC Sydney presenter James Valentine to be held at Town Hall
A public memorial service for beloved ABC presenter and musician James Valentine will be held at Sydney City Hall on May 29.
Valentine died by voluntary assisted dying last month at the age of 64, two years after being diagnosed with cancer.
The celebration of life is open to the public, with recordings to be released in a series of waves.
The first distribution of tickets will take place on Friday, May 15 at 12.30pm and will be available on the 702 ABC Sydney website.
New versions of the tickets will be released next week.
The tribute will also be broadcast on 702 ABC Sydney radio and via the ABC listening app from 12.30pm to 2pm.
702 ABC Sydney station manager Nick Lowther said Valentine wanted a radio show to be held as part of the memorial service.
“All because of his great love for the radio medium”
said Mr. Lowther.
“He just wants to be able to chat through the people he has arranged to speak at the memorial.”
The event will be hosted by former 702 ABC Sydney Drive presenter Richard Glover, who shares a long-standing on-air friendship with Valentine.
Valentine had a 30-year career as a radio host for ABC; He developed his distinctive approach to talkback radio, particularly on the Afternoon program on 702 ABC Sydney.
He officially retired from presenting in February of this year, capping it off with a special broadcast revisiting the highlights of his tenure at the microphone.
