Purdue University has announced a new “Artificial Intelligence study credential” requirement for all undergraduate students at its main campuses, Indianapolis and West Lafayette, to be completed starting in 2026.

The competencies students are required to pass include understanding AI, which Purdue defines as “identifying the core capabilities, strengths, and limitations of AI technologies, as well as ways AI can transform existing methods, processes, and tools.”
Another competency requires students to clearly recognize and communicate the use of AI, including its limitations. The university says this means “developing and advocating decisions informed by AI-driven insights, as well as recognizing the existence, impact and implications of AI in decision-making.”
Students will also be expected to adapt to AI systems as they develop.
“We are extremely eager to work with faculty at the university to bring this critical new requirement to life,” Purdue principal Patrick Wolfe said in a statement released by the university. he said.
