Former Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel warned Thursday that the “Bernie brothers” and democratic socialist candidates could hurt the Democratic Party in November’s midterm elections by forcing moderates in competitive districts to respond to unpopular progressive positions.

He compared the current political climate to 2006, when he led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) when the party won 31 seats in the House. The former Chicago mayor said efforts to elect socialists in safely Democratic districts are now creating problems for candidates elsewhere.
“When DSA attempts to turn safe Democratic states and districts a darker shade of blue, Democratic candidates in swing districts are put at a distinct disadvantage,” Emanuel said. he said.

Emanuel also accused socialists of supporting positions that he said contributed to Democrats’ recent election losses.
“Socialists led the charge to defund the police, open borders, abolish prisons, release violent criminals onto the streets, and degrade the flag,” he said.
Emanuel cited Nebraska Democratic congressional candidate Denise Powell, whom the state’s Republican Party has labeled “DSA Denise.” Powell is running against Republican Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding for an open seat in Nebraska’s competitive 2nd Congressional District.
He argued that Powell should be able to focus on Harding’s record rather than spending campaign resources trying to separate herself from the socialist movement.
“Candidates in competitive districts have to spend time and effort to differentiate themselves from DSA’s agenda when they should be keeping voters focused on Mr. Trump’s corruption,” Emanuel said.
He described Powell as “a bright star perfectly positioned to flip” Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District but said Republicans unfairly labeled him.
Fox News Digital contacted Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for comment. and reached out to Powell but did not receive an immediate response.
On Tuesday, Emanuel got into a heated argument with The New Yorker’s David Remnick about why the potential 2028 Democratic nominee isn’t emphasizing left-wing culture war issues like transgender issues.

On CNN’s “Situation Room” on Friday, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was asked if he agreed with Emanuel’s claim. Buttigieg said moderate Democrats should focus on presenting their own agenda.
“Yes, I think those of us who are more moderate in the party need to focus our efforts on talking about what we stand for,” he said. “Just like the Democratic Party as a whole should be more than opposed to Republicans.”
Buttigieg did not address Emanuel’s criticisms of individual policies; instead, he promoted affordable health care, tax fairness, and campaign finance reform.
“This is the kind of agenda that I think can be unifying, and I’m much more interested in that than any factional project within or outside the Democratic Party,” Buttigieg said.
Buttigieg campaigned with Powell WOWT reported he was in Omaha earlier this month. The DCCC also placed Powell in its Red to Blue program, which supports Democratic candidates in competitive Republican-held districts.

Buttigieg comes in second as a potential 2028 candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, just behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New Hampshire, according to a poll released Wednesday.
