Recruiters admit to using AI robots for job interviews

New research has found that recruiters are increasingly using AI interviewers to screen job candidates.

A survey of 500 recruiters found that four in five (83 percent) now use AI to speed up hiring. CV-Library’s research found that 28 percent rely on it to manage high-volume applications.

The increased use of technology has caused job seekers to lack confidence in the process; 53 percent believe their application was rejected by AI without being reviewed by a human. In an additional survey of 1,100 candidates, 63 percent said AI-led hiring was less fair than human decisions.

David, 37, a part-time bartender, describes his experience of being interviewed by a non-human representative: “Being interviewed by an AI bot felt incredibly alienating; there is no feedback or human interaction, so you have no idea how you will come across.

“It feels like you’re being filtered, and because there’s so little actual communication, it’s easy for the effort you’re putting in to be completely overlooked.”

Research shows that the use of technology is also going in the other direction; Nearly 80 percent of employers surveyed say AI-generated applications have increased in the past year.

A current job seeker named Simon said: “I stayed away from initial interviews with AI platforms; there is no human interaction and it is completely impersonal. But now AI is also involved in human conversations, taking notes during interviews. What am I supposed to do after being unemployed for three months? If AI is going to be a gatekeeper, I can use it to help me get through these doors.”

The rise of artificial intelligence use on both sides comes as business competition increasingly increases. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that between May 2022 and February 2025 the number of vacancies per 100 jobs almost halved, from 4.1 to 2.2.

Meanwhile, the number of applications per job posting has increased by 286 percent by November 2024, according to data from recruitment platform Tribepad.

Lee Biggins, CEO and founder of CV-Library, said: “Candidates have long felt that the human touch in the recruitment process has diminished and that good people are unfairly screened out. This insight from recruiters across agencies and businesses alike suggests their frustrations may be justified.

“This is a timely wake-up call that not everything should be outsourced to AI, especially in recruiting, where each candidate is individually unique. It can add value in automating some laborious processes, but good recruiters use it to supplement, not replace, human intuition.”
