Ashley Farquharson cruised to Olympic victory in bobsled at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics on Tuesday.

The American bobsledder became emotional when he checked the leaderboard and realized he had won his first Olympic medal. Tuesday’s performance in the women’s singles bobsled also marked the second time an American has won an Olympic medal in that event.

Farquharson, who took up skating as an after-school activity growing up inside The Park City, Utah, native said it was almost hard to believe what he accomplished.

“It didn’t really feel real,” Farquharson said after his victory. “Then having everyone meet me on the ice and the whirlwind since then really reinforced that. When I got to the starting point I was like ‘this isn’t real’ for a few seconds.”

German Julia Taubitz won the gold medal in the bobsled by a huge margin of almost one second. Latvian Elena Bota finished second, achieving her country’s best Olympic result.

Until Farquharson’s success, Erin Hamlin was the last American to win a bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Games.

“This was the dream,” Taubitz said. “And now the dream comes true.”

Farquharson failed to medal in any of his first 54 World Cup races until he excelled this season.

It wasn’t the fastest, but it was damn good. He’s an Olympic medalist. Farquharson’s talent will never be questioned again.

“I’m so happy for Ashley, I’m so happy for USA Luge,” said longtime U.S. teammate Emily Fischnaller. “I mean, we’re the ones on the sled, but we’ve got a team behind us that does everything we do. So it’s a testament to all the work everyone’s put into this.”
