Woman faints after being lashed 100 times for having sex outside marriage | World | News

A woman was forced to give in after she and her partner were flogged 100 times each for sex outside of marriage. The unnamed woman was caned on Thursday, May 21, in Banda Aceh, on the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra island, after violating the region’s harsh sharia law.

A person wearing brown clothes from head to toe and a white mask applied the eyelashes, causing the woman’s partner to grimace. The couple were among several people punished under sharia on Thursday. They were punished by Banda Aceh Sharia Court and Prosecutor’s Office with 25 to 100 lashes, including those who engaged in extramarital sex through online apps. Unmarried couples are not allowed to have sex under draconian laws in the Aceh region, the only place in Muslim-majority Indonesia where Sharia law is implemented.

Beating is the punishment of choice for a wide variety of crimes, including gambling, drinking, and homosexual acts. In Aceh, the heaviest penalties under sharia are given to those who rape children; These penalties mean imprisonment of up to 200 canes, imprisonment of up to 200 months or a fine of up to two kilograms of gold.

Punishments are also administered in public places (mostly outside mosques or in public squares) to inflict both shame and pain. The crowd watches and photographs the incident. But human rights groups said humiliation escalated cruelty and caused lasting psychological damage.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have repeatedly condemned this practice, calling it a violation of Indonesia’s constitution and international law obligations.

“Caning is contrary to Indonesia’s constitution and clearly violates international human rights laws and standards,” Amnesty International said in a statement. he said. “This is cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and may amount to torture, in violation of the UN Convention Against Torture and other international conventions to which Indonesia is a party.”

This latest round of punishments comes after another woman and her partner were whipped on the back 140 times each, 40 for drinking alcohol and 100 for sex outside marriage, in one of the harshest punishments seen in the region. Meanwhile, the woman also fainted and had to be taken to the ambulance.

Muhammad Rizal, head of Banda Aceh’s Sharia police, said at the time: “As we promised, we do not make any exceptions, especially for our own members. This definitely tarnishes our name.”
