U.S. Rep. Dina Titus secured her party’s bid for an eighth term in Congress by defeating challengers Gabriel Cornejo, Joy Hoover and Luis Paniagua in the Democratic primary in Nevada’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday.

Titus, who has represented the Las Vegas area since 2013, entered the race as the clear front-runner, backed by labor unions and Democratic organizations and also having significant fundraising advantages.

The veteran lawmaker has faced opposition from candidates who argue Democrats need to embrace a new generation of leadership; this criticism was one that Titus largely rejected during the campaign. Titus credited his experience in Congress and his background on issues important to Southern Nevada voters, such as tourism, transportation and veterans affairs, with helping him win the Democratic primary.

First elected to Congress in 2008 from Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, Titus returned to the House in 2012 following the redistricting of Nevada’s reshaped congressional map. Before serving in Congress, he spent two decades in the Nevada Senate and was a professor of political science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Their main rivals have struggled to gain significant traction in a race largely overshadowed by high-profile statewide contests. Hoover, Cornejo and Paniagua, a businesswoman and nonprofit founder, tried to present themselves as alternatives to the longtime incumbent but ultimately failed to defeat Titus.

The focus now turns to the general election, where Titus is expected to face the Republican nominee in a district that has become more competitive after redistricting in recent years. Still, the Cook Political Report rates Nevada’s 1st Congressional District as “Likely Democratic,” reflecting both the district’s Democratic lean and Titus’ incumbency advantage.

Nevada’s District 1 includes eastern Las Vegas, Henderson, Paradise, and most of the surrounding communities in Clark County. The district has a D+2 rating, according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index. Republicans haven’t held the seat since former Rep. John Ensign left Congress in 1999.
