Reparo! Harry Potter film crew mend potholes blighting Devon village | Devon
Residents of cities, towns and villages across the UK complain that their lives are being ruined by potholes. But life in a small village on a moorland in the English West Country is going a little smoother after some potholes were repaired as if by magic.
Scenes for the new HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter books will be filmed in Lustleigh, Devon, and filmmakers have filled in at least some of the potholes in the area.
Announcing the repair news The neighborhood council said on Facebook: “Good news! The filming company was given permission by DCC [Devon county council] will continue repairs to Wreyland Road using an approved contractor. The contractor will manually fill any major potholes and then assess whether further work is required. “The road will not be closed and can be used normally.”
The villagers welcomed the repairs but questioned why the arrival of a fictional wizard was necessary to solve the problem. One of them responded grumpily to the district council on Facebook: “Might fix potholes for filming but not for daily use.”
Another asked: “Is it possible to establish a parish council? [to] Are you going to ask the movie company to build all the other roads in the neighborhood as a nice gesture?
A third suggested: “Harry Potter and the potholes… a good new book title.”
Wreyland Road is a small road surrounded by stone walls and beautiful thatched cottages, some of which are thatched.
The council has a team of volunteers who repair small potholes and a “Lustleigh pothole tracker” spreadsheet that maps problem areas. Larger potholes exceeding 4cm in depth and 30cm in width must be reported to the district council.
Filming for the new series previously took place in the fishing village of Cadgwith on the Lizard peninsula in south Cornwall. Actor Dominic McLaughlin was photographed in his Harry costume.
According to villagers, filming for the Potter series is taking place in Lustleigh (population: approx. 600) under the codename “Brown Cat”. Tourism businesses in south-west England hope the show, scheduled to air in 2027, will give the region a boost.
