Residents of Poonachi near Ammapettai staged a road blockade on Ammapettai-Anthiyur Road on Friday morning (May 15, 2026) to remove Tasmac liquor outlet operating at the local bus stand.
The protest, attended by more than 100 people, including women, caused vehicle traffic to be disrupted for a while. Protesters said Tasmac store number 3802 operates from Poonachi bus stand and is located about 400 meters away from a government school. They claimed that the store’s location caused frequent accidents in the area, resulting in injuries and deaths.
Neighborhood residents claimed that many petitions were submitted to the authorities to remove the socket, but no action was taken.
Protesters blocked the road to traffic around 8.30am, demanding that the store be closed immediately or moved elsewhere. Revenue officials and police personnel held talks with the protesters. The protest was withdrawn after the authorities assured the citizens that their demands would be forwarded to higher authorities.
