He says he wants people to enjoy “a great British summer”. Meanwhile, another Labor MP with ambitions of managing the economy speaks out. Wes Street He gave an interview to the BBC’s Nick Robinson for the Political Thought podcast and had much more to say about his policy agenda than he did in his resignation speech in the House of Commons yesterday. Like BBC reportedStreeting has proposed a “wealth tax that works” – by which he does not mean what most people think of as a wealth tax (the Green party version – tax on assets close to a certain amount), but instead aligning capital gains tax rates with income tax rates. Streeting said this proposal is broadly the same as one of the main proposals. Workforce Growth Group‘s report Last week up to £12bn a year could be raised.
Lucy RigbyThe new secretary general of the Undersecretariat of Treasury was giving interviews this morning. When asked about Streeting’s offer, he said he had not heard of his interview but suggested Reeves was already taxing wealth. He said in his program today:
We already tax wealth in this country. The Chancellor took a number of measures in his first budget to try to ensure the tax was as progressive and fair as possible, and then took further measures in his last budget.

There are also 14 written statements coming today, and at least two of them seem particularly interesting. The government will publish information on the appointment of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor as trade envoy, in line with his modest speech in the House of Commons. Equalities minister Bridget Phillipson is also publishing long-awaited guidance on single-sex spaces, updated in light of last year’s high court ruling on the meaning of the Equality Act.
