A Kurdish refugee who raped a young girl after taking her to the park online was sentenced to seven years in prison. 27-year-old Mehmet Oğur, who was housed in an immigration hotel after arriving in the UK illegally by small boat, attacked his 18-year-old victim a few weeks after arriving in the UK by small boat.

He pounced on the terrified teenager after arranging to meet in person for the first time in a secluded Midlands park. Ogur, who lived at the Holiday Inn Express in Tamworth, assaulted his victim by force last January and later sent her messages saying he was sorry for what he had done. He later claimed that Google Translate changed the meaning of the messages.

The migrant was found guilty of rape and attempted rape following a trial at Stafford Crown Court last summer after denying any wrongdoing.

The sex monster, a trained veterinary technician, showed no obvious emotion in the dock as he was jailed today.

Sentencing Judge John Edwards told Oğur, who was supported in court by a Turkish interpreter, that the rape had caused “enormous harm” to the victim.

The judge told Oğur, who arrived in Britain on a small boat just weeks before his brutal attack: “Your continued stay in the UK will be decided by others, not me.”

The judge accepted that Oğur was “clearly an intelligence man” who “witnessed extreme violence before being captured from the middle of the sea and arriving in the UK”.

In her victim impact statement read to the court before sentencing, the victim said: “I am a survivor of Mehmet Oğur’s rape.

“No words can describe what he put me through. It completely changed me as a person.

“The truth is I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. It completely destroyed me.”

The unnamed victim, who said she wanted to fight and get justice for herself and “all the girls who are afraid to speak”, added: “It’s been almost a year since he raped me but it still feels like yesterday.

“Why me, why did you choose me to completely destroy you when all I did was show kindness and empathy towards you?”

Joseph McKenna, defending, told the court in mitigation that the defendant suffered from anxiety and depression and had experienced “difficult conditions” as a Kurd in Türkiye.

The hearing was told Ogur attacked the woman after a consensual embrace and kiss during a meeting in a secluded area of Tamworth Castle.

The jury of seven women and five men convicted Oğur after hearing how she shouted at him to stop as he tried to break free.

Oğur made false statements at his trial, claiming that he had only engaged in consensual activity and that the messages he sent to the woman the day after the crime were not an admission of guilt.

One of the messages, the court heard, read: “I’m really sorry, I didn’t really want to do this but I couldn’t stop myself,” while another read: “I’m sorry for forcing you to have sex.”

The prosecutor at Oğur’s trial described the messages as a “full and complete confession of crimes”.

Commenting after the case, Sachan Gautam, a senior prosecutor in the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service’s rape and serious sexual offenses unit, said: “This was an extremely distressing case in which Mehmet Oğur deliberately ignored the victim’s clear refusal to consent.

“Her behavior escalated from unwanted advances to a violent and traumatic rape.

“The CPS worked closely with Staffordshire Police to build a strong case, including forensic evidence of his injuries, CCTV and the victim’s brave statement which ultimately led to his conviction.”

The Holiday Inn Express in Tamworth was set on fire and damaged by rioters in August 2024, days after the Southport dance class stabbings. Several people were later jailed for their roles in the mayhem.
