Sajjanar Warns Of Action After Youth Film Reel Offering Drugs At Temple

Hyderabad: City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Tuesday warned youths against indulging in objectionable acts for social media ‘likes’. The warning came in the wake of a viral video showing two youths allegedly offering narcotics to a Lord Shiva idol on the occasion of Mahashivratri.

Following the public outcry over the video, he warned of strict legal action against those committing such acts. In the recording recorded near a Shiva temple in Shamshabad district on Sunday, the duo can be heard saying that they have come to offer “prasadam” to Shiva.

The two youths are then seen boasting that they are doing something different when devotees normally offer coconut as prasadam. One of them is seen holding a narcotic drug suspected to be marijuana. Later, the teenager posted the video on his social media account, following which many netizens demanded action.

Taking note of the reel, Sajjanar asked, “Are you going to go to any extent just to become famous?” he asked. In a post published on ‘X’ on Tuesday, the Commissioner said: “Maha Shivaratri is a symbol of devotion…a path to liberation. On such a solemn and sacred occasion, displaying intoxicants in the name of offering prasadam is an extremely shameful act. It is a perverse act.”

Sajjanar described it as a serious offense and said that if the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were implemented, “you may have to regret it for the rest of your life”. He also advised them not to sacrifice their golden future for momentary pleasures such as “likes and views”. “Such actions will not be tolerated in any way. Strict legal action will be taken against those responsible. Make social media a platform for your creativity, not a gateway to addiction.” he said. Meanwhile, sources said that the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) team is investigating the case.
