SC Gets 5 New Judges; Strength to Go Up to 37

New Delhi: Five new justices were appointed to the Supreme Court on Monday, which will now have 37 justices, one fewer than the increased mandate of 38.
According to separate notifications issued by the justice ministry in the Union law ministry on Monday morning, senior SC advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, Chief Judge of Bombay High Court Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Chief Judge of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Justice Arun Palli have been elevated to their posts. superior court judges.
Once they are sworn in and assume office, the SC will officially have 37 judges.
The government last month issued an ordinance amending the law that would increase the sanctioned strength of the apex court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.
While there were currently two vacancies, after the sanction was increased, a total of six posts became vacant in the apex court.
Five appointments were made on Monday, leaving one seat vacant on the Supreme Court.
The five names were recommended by the Supreme Court Board on May 27, and the appointments took place within four days.
