North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said in a statement: “Fire crews are currently supporting a multi-agency response to reports of an explosion at a residence on Cambridge Street in Scarborough.

“We were called to the scene today (Friday, May 8) at around 5.45 in the morning. Around 50-70 houses and workplaces in the vicinity were evacuated as a precaution, and the cordon still continues.

“Fire crews are at the scene working alongside the ambulance service, police and gas board.

“The public is asked to avoid the area while emergency services continue to attend to the incident. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.”
