‘Secret’ beach hidden behind tunnel amazes tourists | UK | Travel

To access Shaldon’s Ness Cove Beach, visitors must first pass through the historic Smugglers’ Tunnel, a covered passageway with inclined paths and steps leading down to the shoreline. The strange and somewhat frightening entrance sparked huge curiosity online after TikTok account @ukhiddengems posted footage that revealed exactly what was inside the tunnel. Despite the rather scary approach, visitors insist that the beach waiting for them at the far end is absolutely magnificent.
According to Visit South Devon, Ness Cove is among the area’s hidden treasures. The statement includes the following statements: “Located in the middle of sheltered cliffs, Ness Bay stands out as one of our most secluded and scenic beaches.”
The tourism website also highlights that reaching the beach via the original Smugglers Tunnel is part of what makes the destination so memorable for those who go there. Located close to popular destinations such as Teignmouth and Torquay, the beach is increasingly popular with both residents and holidaymakers looking for a quieter spot away from the crowded seaside resorts.
The beach consists mainly of pebbles and slopes gradually towards the water, making it a preferred swimming spot in the milder months. But many visitors claim that the real appeal lies in the sense of seclusion and tranquility provided by the imposing cliffs surrounding the bay.
Many people online expressed enthusiasm to visit, while others joked that it should remain a well-kept local secret. One person commented: “I spent some very happy days there as a child 50 years ago!”
Another added: “Ness Beach…shush don’t say…we love it there.” Others admitted that the tunnel brought back childhood memories, while one visitor said: “I still get scared when I remember how my brothers hid in the tunnel and jumped on me!”
Reviews on TripAdvisor similarly praised the beach; one visitor described it as “the most unusual yet enjoyable walk to a beach” they had ever experienced. Another added: “Very nice and wide beach and less crowded than other nearby beaches. Enjoy.”
