Seven Britons among those killed in Spain wildfires

In the statement, officials said seven of the victims were from the United Kingdom, three from Belgium, one from France and the other from the United States. The last victim was a Spanish national.

“Of the 13 dead, eight were women and five were men, all adults,” said the public agency responsible for identifying the victims.

Among the dead British citizens were Pete and Fran Gillam, a couple living in the village of Bédar, which was most affected by the bushfires. Their deaths were confirmed by their families.

Their daughter, Danielle Gillam-Kirton, from Sheffield, posted on Facebook saying the family were “heartbroken to share that we have received confirmation from police that neither mother nor father survived the fire.”

The fire, now under control, has destroyed about 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) of land, officials said.

Spain has been subjected to frequent severe heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C.
