Several arrested after police shutdown ‘Perth Skidmas’ hoon event
Out-of-control hoodlums turned Welshpool’s industrial area into a racetrack, performing dangerous stunts near pedestrians and drivers even targeted a police car.
The incident took place just before midnight on Tuesday night, with around 1,000 people in attendance.
The vision for the event, dubbed Perth’s first ‘Skidmas’ by organisers, shows cars on fire and donuts just meters away from the watching crowd.
The footage also shows a police car surrounded by the group and a person ‘surfing’ in the vehicle.
“Police are coming everywhere, people kicking police cars, people running away from the cops, a few cars have been stolen,” said the event organizers, who did not give their names. 9 News Perth.
The meeting quickly moved to Kenwick, where multiple officers had to close it down.
While many people were detained, vehicles were also seized. Two people were later charged with drunk driving.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the events were dangerous.
“We have seen serious injuries this year, particularly at Burswood, so my strong message to friends at all times is that this is a very dangerous activity,” he said.
But one attendee said the meeting was good for people’s mental health.
“There’s a lot of people here who are depressed and going through things like that, and getting behind the wheel of a car, burning tires or whatever, it just liberates that person,” he said.
Organizers say they were already planning another event and ignored police warnings.
