These unstable conditions are the result of a trough that extends across the state’s southern interior and is expected to move southeastward late Saturday.
Senior forecaster Baden Gilbert said the risk extended west from the coast to Toowoomba and north to Rainbow Beach.
He said the area at greatest risk was the south-east interior, from places such as Boonah and Beaudesert on the Scenic Rim to the Lockyer Valley, including areas around Ipswich, and Kilcoy and Esk.
“There is also a risk of very dangerous thunderstorms in this area, so destructive winds or massive hailstorms are not impossible,” Gilbert said.
“If we really achieve great success [storm] The cell is going – and you know, everything is lining up – there may also be a risk of heavy rain, but there’s not that much moisture around.
The trough will leave the coast by Sunday, and the forecast also notes the potential for storms along the coastline in the early morning hours.
