Action thriller Fan, which starred Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role as superstar Aryan Khanna and devoted fan Gaurav Chandna, opened to lukewarm response, underperformed at the box office and failed to make back its budget domestically.

Shah Rukh Khan is all set to celebrate his 60th birthday on November 2. Throughout his career spanning over three decades, the superstar has produced numerous blockbuster films including Jawan, Pathaan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Main Hoon Na, Veer-Zaara, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. However, some of his films could not even perform well at the box office. Released in 2016, The Fan was one of those films that became a commercial failure upon its release but has now become a cult classic.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan as superstar Aryan Khanna and his devoted fan Gaurav Chandna, Fan was inspired by Khan’s real life and was even shot at his home, Mannat. Despite being an action-packed thriller, the film opened to lukewarm response, underperformed at the box office and failed to earn back its budget domestically.

Maneesh Chopra’s directorial collected only Rs 80 crore nett in India for Rs 85 crore. When overseas figures are added, Fan’s total gross collections worldwide amounted to Rupees 183 billion. But over the years, Shah Rukh Khan fans have expressed their love for Fan on social media, and the film is now considered among the superstar’s most underrated films and also one of his best performances.

Fan was a song-less film but it did have a Jabra Fan promotional track composed by Vishal-Shekhar, written by Varun Grover and sung by Nakash Aziz. The song was released in 9 different Indian languages ​​(Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Odia) and 2 foreign languages ​​(Arabic and Sinhala). In the trailer, Shah Rukh’s Gaurav is seen dancing on the streets of Delhi. Fan was directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner Yash Raj Films.
