Shock new report highlights average price of cod and chips across the UK

Those hoping for a cheaper holiday by staying on the UK coast this year can now look away.

A portion of fish and chips across the UK will cost an average of £10.29, while cod and chips reaches £11.41, a new report has said.

The report, the first for which Seafish has collected data, said rising costs for fish, potatoes, oil and energy were putting pressure on shop owners, with many of them diversifying their menus with items such as kebabs, pizza or fish masala, or offering cutting options to increase efficiency.

Cod, haddock, shrimp and fish cakes are the most common seafood found on menus; Haddock predominates in Scotland and parts of Yorkshire and the Midlands, with cod remaining the most common choice elsewhere in the UK.

Report writer Jennifer Robson of Seafish said: “Our report confirms that fish and chips are very much alive and kicking in the UK, remaining one of the country’s most iconic and recognizable dishes, enjoyed by millions of people every year.

“We embarked on this research to better understand an industry that plays such an important role in local economies and communities in the UK and provides a vital way for consumers to enjoy seafood.

“Fish and chip shops also play an important role in exposing the public to a wide range of seafood beyond the traditional cod and haddock, such as lesser-known species such as halibut, stingray and pollock, which can offer excellent food quality and greater choice.”

According to industry body Seafish, around 7,210 fish and chip shops operate across the UK.

Andrew Crook, chairman of the National Fish Fries Federation, said: “This is a very welcome report, its findings help us not only benchmark the fish and chip industry but also calculate the value it adds to the economy.

“The findings also highlight the resilience and adaptability of fish and chip businesses.

“Whilst the sector faces challenges, businesses continue to evolve in response to changing consumer preferences and working conditions while maintaining the food tradition that remains an important part of British culture.”
