Shocking justice scandal erupts as 2,000 paedophiles to be let out | Politics | News

Nearly 2,000 pedophiles will be released from prison every year under Labour’s controversial sentencing reforms. Child sexual abusers jailed for “some of the worst possible crimes” could be released after spending just a third of their prison terms behind bars, according to research reviewed by the Sunday Express.
This is because only the most “serious” offenders will have to serve half their sentences in prison, a cut from the current 67%. This list includes those convicted of rape and assault by penetration. However, perverts caught filming, distributing or publishing child sexual abuse images and demons imprisoned for having sexual intercourse with a child will only be able to spend one-third of their sentences in prison.
Four in five pedophiles would spend less time in prison under Labour’s plans, alarming analysis has revealed.
Justice Minister David Lammy will face fresh anger from MPs as the Sentencing Bill returns to Parliament next week.
Shadow justice secretary Kieran Mullan, who revealed the figures, said: “Pedophiles are devastating children’s lives, often leaving them to fight demons forever.
“These are some of the worst crimes there are – child molestation, child rape, boys and girls.
“What kind of government could plan to let such criminals out of prison sooner?”
He added: “If these laws are passed many will be released from prison after serving a third of their sentences.
“Not as a contingency plan to deal with short-term prison density problems, but as a permanent and fundamental change to our criminal laws.
“Every child sexual abuse victim I’ve ever spoken to wants these despicable criminals to spend more time in prison than they currently do. Not less.”
An analysis of Ministry of Justice criminal statistics found that 2,254 offenders were arrested for sexual offenses against children last year.
This includes 167 perverts who were imprisoned for raping a woman under 16.
Some 548 pedophiles jailed for receiving, permitting, making, distributing or publishing indecent images of children will also spend less time behind bars.
And 229 people convicted of sexual assault could be allowed home sooner if similar numbers were jailed under the proposed new “progress model”, figures show.
Another 200 offenders over the age of 18 jailed for sexual activity involving a child under 16 will also spend less time in prison.
A staggering 104 people jailed for sexual intercourse with a child under 13 and 248 people caged for sexually assaulting a girl under 13 could also benefit from the most lenient sentencing reforms in a generation.
A shocking 54 people jailed for raping a child under 13 could also be released earlier.
This means a staggering 82% of offenders convicted of child sexual offenses will receive lighter sentences compared to last year’s figures.
Analysis of sentencing figures also shows that nearly 2,000 perverts have been jailed for sexual offenses against children each year since 2021.
Child safety campaigner Maggie Oliver said: “These latest proposals to further reduce the time dangerous sexual predators spend in prison are, in my view, another clear example of a broken criminal justice system.
“I believe that our country, starved by years of underfunding, inadequate prison sentences, and dangerous criminals released too early, our country, once respected for having the best justice system in the world, is now a laughing stock around the world.”
He added: “While we see people being sent to prison for long periods of time for ‘naughty words’ on social media, we continue to see the most dangerous criminals in our society walking free, being released too early because we don’t have prison places to keep them locked up as they should be.”
Labor MP Sarah Champion, who campaigned on the grooming gangs scandal in Rotherham, said: “The Sentencing Bill is complex and opaque, which makes me worry about the unintended consequences.
“I am concerned that some of the most serious criminals, especially rapists and child molesters, are being released prematurely into our communities without appropriate safeguards.”
Under Labour’s plans, murderers and rapists will be released from prison early, while 43,000 criminals will avoid prison altogether.
Most prisoners will be tagged and monitored electronically as ministers try to prevent a repeat of the prison overcrowding crisis.
The majority of criminals will be released after one-third of their sentences.
They will spend another third under house arrest and only then will they be licensed and allowed to join society.
Offenders sentenced to more than four years will be released after serving only half of the prison sentence, while in most cases sentences of less than 12 months will be waived.
Only the most extreme criminals will be denied the right to leave prison halfway
For the first time, criminals will be tagged before leaving prison to prevent them from causing harm to communities.
The Conservatives plan to step up attacks on Labor over controversial sentencing reforms next week.
Labor has insisted reforms are needed to prevent prison services from collapsing.
Justice chiefs feared a complete breakdown of law and order as police were unable to arrest any suspects as convicts were taken to police cells.
A Labor source said: “The Tories have brought our prisons to the brink of collapse – the entire criminal justice system is days away from grinding to a halt.
“Labour will not apologize for taking the difficult decisions needed to stabilize the justice system after 14 years of Tory incompetence. The Conservatives can only point to the consequences of their disastrous record in government.”
“The Labor Government continues to impose punishments that work, including chemical castration, driving and drinking bans and income reduction orders, ensuring offenders pay for their crimes while ensuring they can turn their lives around.”
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “The most serious offenders (those receiving life imprisonment, IPP and extended certain sentences) will not be affected in any way by the Sentencing Bill.
“Anyone who commits a sexual offense will feel the full force of the law. “While sentencing is the job of judges, we ensure they have a range of serious penalties that can put dangerous criminals behind bars for long periods of time.
“We are also introducing measures to chemically castrate sex offenders to stop them re-offending.
“And everyone who leaves prison is kept under close surveillance, with tags tracking their every move, and we won’t hesitate to lock them up if they make the wrong move.”
