Sitcom star Candice Bergen reveals that she accidentally lit a Swiss restaurant on fire

If someone said to me, “Hey, man! You look good, by the way. Are you losing weight? Anyway, guess which sitcom star almost burned down a restaurant in Switzerland once,” I don’t think I’d get it right.

Before I got to the real answer, I researched everyone from William Frawley and Larry Storch to Red Foxx and the dog who played Tiger on “The Brady Bunch”…

The sitcom legend was a guest on fellow sitcom legend Ted Danson’s podcast, “Where Everyone Knows Your Name,” when he asked her to tell a story about setting fire to a restaurant.

You’ve got to give it to Ted, he knows podcast gold when he sees it.

“It wasn’t just any restaurant, it was the most beautiful restaurant,” Bergen said. “The school I was going to was founded in Olden, in a ski resort in Gstaad.”

Wow, so it’s not like an abandoned Golden Stockyard or something? Candice, come on!

“I had snuck out. Since I was only 14, I wasn’t allowed to go out at night, so I had snuck out.”

She said she ate meat fondue (meat cooked in oil) with older girls and drank wine, which you could do in Switzerland when you were 14.

“I said, ‘Oh, let’s taste the oil. Let’s put some wine in the oil,'” he explained. “So I gleefully threw my glass into the oil, and the flame rose to the ceiling of the restaurant. And we were all evacuated; it was snowing outside.”

This sounds like one of those stories a friend tells you while you’re hanging out and discussing teenage debauchery.

You tell him how you egged your friend’s house on one time, and he totally singles you out: “Yes, I almost burned down a fancy Swiss restaurant once.”

Of course, you don’t forget the person who almost burned down a restaurant. Bergen said he returned to the area years later and became known.

“And he said, ‘Aren’t you the woman who burned down Olden?'” she recalled. “And I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ So my name lived on.”

What a story. Quite an interview, honestly.
