Salman Khan approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights. The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a petition from the Sultan actor on Thursday seeking comprehensive legal protection against unauthorized use of his personality traits. Salman’s move represents a significant contribution to the growing number of public figures who are turning to the judiciary to prevent their identities from being misused, especially in the evolving environment of digital media and artificial intelligence.

The Tiger 3 actor urged the Court to issue directions restraining several named and unnamed (John Doe) accused from using his name, image, voice, likeness, dialogues, mannerisms and other attributes that form part of his personality. According to the actor, many platforms and organizations use his identity without his consent, creating the risk of misleading consumers, reducing brand value, and causing irreparable damage to commercial and personal rights.

The plea underscores a broader trend observed in recent months in which prominent film personalities and digital creators are resorting to judicial intervention to protect the commercial and honorary aspects of their identities. The Delhi High Court has emerged as an important forum in shaping this jurisprudence. It had earlier granted sweeping injunctions to Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan and content creator Raj Shamani, granting them exclusive rights to control commercial exploitation of the persons concerned.

The court’s approach has gone beyond traditional abuse. Strong attention has been paid to AI-generated impersonations, deepfakes, and other forms of manipulated digital content that can corrupt a person’s image and reputation with alarming speed and reach. In many decisions, judges emphasized that such imitations violated the rights to privacy, dignity and publicity, while also warning that legitimate artistic expression, satire, reporting and commentary should be protected within constitutional limits.
