Suspected DUI driver survives 600-foot cliff crash in Northern California

A driver suspected of being under the influence miraculously survived after a pickup truck plunged nearly 200 feet off a cliff in Northern California last week, California authorities said Monday.
The crash occurred on State Route 263 in Siskiyou County, a scenic highway carved out of steep cliffs and rugged terrain known for its dramatic drop-offs.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the pickup appeared to veer off the road before rolling down the mountainside and eventually coming to rest at the bottom of the cliff.
“Remarkably, the driver survived what could have easily been a fatal crash,” the agency said.

CHP said that after the authorities intervened at the scene, it was determined that the driver was allegedly disabled.
The person was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Photos released by the agency show the pickup truck mangled and almost unrecognizable after a violent dive, with debris strewn across the rocky mountainside.
Authorities did not immediately identify the driver or provide details about the extent of injuries sustained in the crash.

Following the incident, CHP urged drivers to never get behind the wheel while impaired and warned that the consequences could be devastating.
“This crash is a powerful reminder that impaired driving not only puts your life at risk, but also the lives of everyone on the road,” the CHP said. he said. “Choosing to drive while intoxicated can lead to devastating consequences that are completely preventable.”
