Solingen stabbings: Police swarm German city centre after incident | World | News

On the evening of August 23, 2024, there was a mass stabbing attack in Solingen, in which 3 people died and 8 people were injured.
A 24-hour manhunt followed the attack and resulted in police arresting the suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian refugee. The man is also suspected of being a member of the Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attacker was sentenced to life imprisonment and subsequently placed in preventive custody after admitting his crimes at the start of the trial in September 2025.
Although his asylum application was rejected in 2023 and he was ordered deported to Bulgaria, where he had previously applied for asylum, authorities were unable to find him and he remained in Germany throughout this period.
