UK weather maps show -3C Arctic freeze hitting in hours as temperatures plunge in May | Weather | News

Just as many Brits hope summer is approaching, the country may actually be returning to wintry conditions this week, with temperatures dropping to -3C in a matter of hours. Parts of northern England and Scotland will drop below freezing on Wednesday, while parts of Aberdeenshire will reach -3C, according to new maps from WXCHARTS using MetDesk data.
Slightly milder weather is expected in the UK, but it could still reach -1C in Cumbria; This is much colder than the UK’s average May temperature of 16C. Separately, the Met Office’s forecast for Wednesday reads: “Most areas are dry with patchy clouds and sunny skies.
“There are a few showers across Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England. Temperatures are below average for this time of year.”
Most areas will remain “dry” today due to “variable amounts of cloud and sunny skies” across the country. “Heavy rain” will occur in the north, where conditions are likely to become “cold”.
The Met Office added that “cloudy and scattered showers” were expected to move southwards tonight.
According to the latest forecast, Scotland is facing “loud showers” which could fall in the form of snow in the Northern Isles (Orkney and Shetland) this evening.
The Met Office predicts overnight low temperatures will be -4C in northern areas and -2C in the south. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to become quite mild as the week progresses.
The forecast for Thursday through Saturday reads: “Mainly dry, somewhat sunny and fairly cool at first. The chance of showers increases on Friday and rain is possible in the south on Saturday. The weather is warming.”
