Speaker scolds ministers for making major announcements on TikTok | News

The Speaker of the House of Commons has criticized ministers for making major announcements about TikTok before making them in parliament.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday (May 21) ahead of Rachel Reeves’ cost-of-living plan announcement, Sir Lindsay Hoyle criticized ministers for announcing policies on social media before updating MPs.
As the chancellor prepared to outline measures to mitigate the economic effects of the Iran war, he received a rebuke from his deputy, Judith Cummins; Many of these had already been given to the media.
The Ministerial Code, which regulates how ministers should act, states that policy announcements must first be made in the Parliament.
After highlighting the importance of the regulation, Sir Lindsay said: “We have spent the last three days drip-feeding this announcement to the media. It is not in line with the government’s own rules and is unacceptable.”
“These bigots from both parties are elected to this House to hear this first, not to be outside a Morrisons petrol station, not to be on a bus, not to do it on TikTok.”
