Special Parliament session: Opposition leaders to meet in Mallikarjun Kharge’s office to finalise strategy

Floor leaders of opposition parties will meet on Thursday to chalk out the strategy of LoP, Rajya Sabha and House floor in a special session at Mallikarjun Kharge’s office in Parliament.

Three important bills are expected to be introduced in the special session of Parliament that begins today, one of which aims to reserve seats for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and the other to redraw constituency boundaries.

The opposition has been expressing concern over the reasons for changing these boundaries and increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850.

The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Delimitation Bill, 2026 are scheduled to be introduced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The government convened a special session of Parliament on April 16, 17 and 18 to pass the amendment to Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
The Law Minister is also scheduled to table a proposal in the Lok Sabha to suspend the provisions of Rule 66 for the purpose of passing the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill and the Limitation Bill together.
The motion states that this House “suspends the provision of Rule 66 of the Rules of Procedure and Business Conduct in the Lok Sabha in its application to motions for consideration and passage of the Delimitation Bill, 2026 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to the extent that they are subordinate to the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026.”
The government is seeking opposition support to pass the amendment bill to implement the women reservation law from the 2029 Lok Sabha polls based on the 2011 census.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged opposition parties to support the amendment to ensure that reservation for women comes into effect after the 2029 general elections.

“This is the wish of every sister and daughter of this country and we must fulfill it unanimously,” he said at an event in Dehradun on Tuesday.

Opposition parties in their statement on Wednesday said that they fully support the early implementation of reservation for women but are firmly opposed to the Limitation Bill.
