Starmer and Merz to sign UK–Germany treaty targeting smuggling gangs and boosting defence ties | Foreign policy

Keir Starmer will host Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday to sign a new bilateral agreement on Downing Street, expanded defense exports and closer industrial bonds between England and Germany.

The bilateral friendship and cooperation treaty points to the final stage of Starmer’s proposal to reconstruct the influence of England in Europe without reopening the official ties with the EU.

The Treaty includes the commitment to make it illegal to facilitate unauthorized migration to the UK by closing a key supply path used by smugglers working from the German region.
