Sir Keir Starmer sided with the European leader by publishing a thinly veiled criticism. Donald TrumpNew 28-item peace plan for Ukraine. The British Prime Minister was among 13 European and international leaders who said on Saturday that the US peace plan for Ukraine was “a basis that will require additional work”.
The group expressed concern about the key point in the proposal, arguing that the Eastern European country would be vulnerable to future attacks by Russia if its armed forces were limited. The joint statement issued by the Council of Europe included the following statements: “We welcome the continued efforts of the United States to bring peace to Ukraine.
“The first draft of the 28-article plan contains important elements that will be necessary for a just and lasting peace. Therefore, we believe that the draft is a basis that will require additional work.
“We are ready to take action to ensure that future peace is sustainable. We are clear on the principle that borders should not be changed by force.
“We are also concerned about the proposed limitations on Ukrainian armed forces, which will leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attacks. We reiterate that the implementation of European Union and NATO-related elements will need the approval of EU and NATO members respectively.
“We take this opportunity to underline the strength of our support to Ukraine. We will continue to coordinate closely with Ukraine and the United States in the coming days.”
The statement came after the US President set a deadline for Ukraine to accept the US-brokered plan. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky argued that his country faces a choice between “losing its honor and losing an important partner” – the United States.
The leaked plan, backed by Vladimir Putin, reportedly includes points that Ukraine had previously found unacceptable.
The peace terms include the transfer to Russia of territory not occupied by Kremlin troops, with Moscow retaining most of the Ukrainian territory currently under siege.
Ukraine will also have to abandon its dream of joining NATO and reduce the size of its army.
