Steve Cohen vows to keep David Stearns as Mets president

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Almost everything David Stearns touched with the New York Mets became familiar.

Stearns took over as the Mets’ president of baseball operations in 2024 and advanced to the National League Championship Series, but after posting the best record in baseball en route to an epic collapse last year and following that up with a 36-50 record so far, Stearns has become Queens’ public enemy No. 1.

The Mets last week fired manager Carlos Mendoza, who joined the team in 2024, but Mets owner Steve Cohen said Stearns will remain in his position for the duration of his contract, which expires in 2028 (Mendoza’s contract expires after this season).

“We were signed for two and a half years. Everybody forgets; does he get any credit for ’24? Doesn’t that count? We almost made it to the World Series. And that was only two years ago. It’s a mixed record,” Cohen said. New York Post’s “The Show” podcast.

“I’m not going to say it’s going great, but it’s too early to judge. And if we’re going to burn down, I really feel strongly that it’s a terrible place to be. Every time it burns and churns, guess what, next time nobody wants to come. If you’re going to be short-term focused, is someone going to put their career in your hands?”

METS FIRE CARLOS MENDOZA IN NIGHT MASSAGE SEASON WITH BASEBALL’S LARGEST $330 MILLION SALARY COLLECTION

“I have a contract. It’s a five-year contract. And we will continue this contract until the end.”

This was nearly impossible to predict because the Mets had the largest payroll in baseball at nearly $330 million, but a 12-game losing streak in April was impossible to overcome. After last year’s collapse, Stearns overhauled the squad but nothing worked.

The Mets traded Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo, released Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, and added Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert, Bo Bichette, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. Polanco hasn’t played since April 14 and Robert hasn’t played since April 26; Bichette, on the other hand, is having by far the worst season of his career. Williams has a 4.13 ERA after struggling with the New York Yankees last season, but Luke Weaver’s 2.00 ERA is a lone bright spot.

The Mets’ offense has the second-worst OPS in the league at .673, and their starting pitchers’ 4.75 ERA is the fourth-worst mark. They also have the third-most mistakes in the league, despite Stearns’ preference for “run blocking” in the offseason.
