Extinction Rebellion said the dye used is a fluorescent, non-toxic tracer commonly used in environmental studies such as monitoring water flows or monitoring leaks. The group reportedly insisted that the paint did not pose an ecological threat.
The group also argued that the show was designed to “draw attention to the huge impacts of climate collapse” and claimed that Venice was among the most vulnerable cities in Europe due to rising sea levels and increasingly frequent flooding.
