Sunny Hostin backs NAACP campaign urging Black athletes to boycott schools

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin on Wednesday backed the NAACP’s call for Black athletes and families to boycott public universities in states that allegedly undermine Black representation.
Hostin and ABC’s daytime talk show panel discussed the “Out of Bounds” campaign after the organization was announced Tuesday. Although Hostin acknowledged that college athletes would sacrifice opportunities, he suggested it could spark political change.
“I think there needs to be a strategy,” Hostin said. “So athletes have been involved in protests and politics for a long time.”

He continued, “Remember the Olympics, you had John Carlos and Muhammad Ali, but these were already established athletes. These college athletes are ready to get a free education. Now they’re ready to make money through NIL, so I think that’s asking a lot. But I think economic harm and economic harm has been a very effective tool in the civil rights movement for a long time.”
The campaign is primarily targeting schools in the SEC and ACC in states such as Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Georgia to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision. Louisiana v. Callais decision on race-based congressional districts.

Hostin added that this boycott would only include 13 schools and that top athletes “will have a lot of other options.”

“And I would suggest, if you think about Ole Miss, I think there was a comeback… Her name was Kylin Hill. She played at Ole Miss. You know, Ole Miss brings in a lot of money. She swore she wouldn’t play unless the state changed the Confederate flag. The Confederate flag came down months later. Because college sports make a lot of money,” he said.

Hostin’s fellow co-hosts were more reluctant to support the idea, but Joy Behar noted that “young people are the ones changing the world” in terms of potential resistance.
Alyssa Farah Griffin called the campaign “a very good idea” but felt that it “put too much responsibility on young people who are not creating a redistribution problem.” Whoopi Goldberg admitted she doesn’t believe campaigning is the “best way” to achieve change.

“I really think it’s going to be on a case-by-case basis because I don’t know how many schools we’re talking about. I don’t know how many athletes we’re talking about and I don’t know that this is the best way to go. It might be part of a bigger picture, but I don’t know if that’s the only way to go,” Goldberg said.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, supported the boycott on Tuesday.
