Super League Grand Final: Hull KR 24-6 Wigan Warriors – Robins pull off treble

While the 2024 final was a tense and low-scoring game, Hull KR reversed that script with this year’s war of attrition.
The secrecy of last year is behind us. What about nerves? Which nerves? This was a team built for this situation, knowing they were on the cusp of greatness and seizing the opportunity.
However, this may not have been the case as they were off the pace in the opening stages and the Frenchman was not held back by turnovers before his score was wiped out.
Other than that, although they seemed disheartened by the incident, knowing they were 80 minutes away from a history-making treble, they didn’t show it.
Much has been said about Hull KR’s recent and distant past in the build-up to the match; whether it be relegation in the Million Pound Match in 2016 or last in the Super League in 2020.
In fact, apart from some second-tier trophies, you had to go back 40 years when the Robins were last at the top.
With the support of retirees Waerea-Hargreaves and Micky McIlorum, who almost missed the game through suspension before KR’s successful appeal this week, they quickly opened up Wigan and never looked back.
Robins talisman Lewis has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons but, like his team, this feels like the moment in his career when he truly comes alive.
But it was a team performance. It was not won by individual moments of brilliance.
It was a team display befitting a three-time winning side and was led by an elite coach in Willie Peters.
Hull KR are getting better every season under Peters’ tutelage and on that evidence you wonder if they will be even tougher in 2026.
More to follow.
