Supreme Court Bar Association Ask Wangchuk to End Hunger Strike

New Delhi: Expressing concern over the deteriorating health condition of education reformer Sonam Wangchuk during her ongoing indefinite fast, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Executive Committee on Thursday passed a resolution urging her to end the protest. Bar Association said his action awakened the nation’s conscience, but the country needed him to continue his leadership rather than risking his life.
The decision was adopted at a meeting of the SCBA Executive Committee to discuss Wangchuk’s fast. The committee stated that his protest had drawn national attention to issues related to the NEET exam and the overall state of the country’s education system. He described his lifelong contribution to innovation, enterprise building and public service as an inspiration to young people and society at large. According to the decision, Wangchuk’s hunger strike once again emphasized the importance of moral courage in public life and reminded citizens of their responsibility to protect constitutional values.
The committee observed that his protest evolved into a call to strengthen the moral and institutional foundations of the country.
SCBA also expressed disappointment that Wangchuk took such an extreme step to reform education but institutions failed to respond with the urgency and sensitivity the situation required. He expressed concern about what he called systemic deficiencies affecting millions of students and a growing decline in accountability in public institutions. At the same time, the Committee emphasized that Wangchuk’s mission should continue through his active participation rather than personal sacrifice. India needs his experience, guidance and leadership to help strengthen institutions and restore public trust, he said, adding that the nation does not need to risk its life to express its view. As part of the decision, SCBA decided to expand legal and research assistance to initiatives that promote transparency, fairness, and accountability in educational processes within its mandate. It also decided to support reforms aimed at improving institutional integrity and promoting ethical governance through sustainable public participation.
Reaffirming its commitment to constitutional morality and institutional integrity, SCBA said it will continue to contribute to the long-term development of the country through constructive legal participation. The Executive Committee concluded the resolution with a heartfelt appeal to Wangchuk to break his fast, maintain his health, and continue to serve the nation with his “strength, clarity, and leadership.” The decision was signed by SCBA Honorary Secretary Pragya Baghel.
