Aberdeen University employee charged over Ann Widdecombe death post | UK | News

A University of Aberdeen employee has been arrested and charged in connection with a social media post about the death of former MP and Express columnist Ann Widdecombe. Heather Herbert had previously been reported to police over an online post made public on the Friday morning following Ms Widdecombe’s death.

The post was reportedly published before it was revealed that Devon and Cornwall Police had launched a murder investigation into the death of the former Tory minister. Police Scotland initially said no crime had been identified in connection with the mission.

Today police said a 50-year-old man was arrested and charged.

The statement made by the police department included the following statements: “On Saturday, July 11, 2026, we received reports regarding a post made online.

“Following further assessment, a 50-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with his alleged involvement.

“A report will be submitted to the financial prosecutor’s office.”

Ms Widdecombe, a former Conservative Party MP and Reform UK spokesperson, was found dead at her home in Devon on Thursday, July 9.

A 28-year-old man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was first arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday.

On Monday, he was arrested again on suspicion of committing, preparing or inciting terrorist acts.
