Supreme Court seeks centre’s response on women’s reservation law implementation

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Center to respond to the PIL seeking implementation of the women’s reservation law, which mandates that one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures be reserved for women.

Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan, notifying the centre, verbally stated that women are the largest minority in the country and this is “related to the political equality of women”.

Congress leader Jaya Thakur has made a plea demanding the implementation of the Women Reservation Act, 2024, without waiting for any new restrictions.
The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on September 20, 2023, and by the Rajya Sabha the next day. It received the President’s approval on September 28, 2023.

Thakur’s lawyer argued that it was unfortunate that even after 75 years of independence, “we (women) have to approach the court for representation… They have to reserve only one-third of the total seats. Based on some data, they decided to accept reservation.” The bench stated orally that the court has limitations in intervening in such policy matters.
