Suspect in Louisiana linked to Hamas attack charged in federal court

A suspect in a Hamas terror attack on Israel in October 2023 that sparked a two-year war between the two sides has been formally charged in federal court.

Mahmoud Amin Ya’qub al-Muhtadi, who lives in Louisiana, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Lafayette on charges of conspiracy to support a foreign terrorist organization and visa fraud, KADN reported.

If convicted, he faces life imprisonment in the United States.

Al-Muhtadi did not accept the accusations, KADN reported.

The indictment links al-Muhtadi to the Hamas attack that killed nearly 1,200 people. Tens of thousands of Palestinians were also killed in Israel’s military retaliation.

Authorities allege that al-Muhtadi received training with the Hamas military group before entering the United States on a fake visa. He was working at a restaurant until his arrest last week.

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said Al-Muhtadi should face legal consequences if convicted.

“Obviously he’s a war criminal there. But I think there’s more than one way to pursue that, and if he’s guilty, I think he should face the full consequences of his actions,” Cassidy told KADN. he said.

Al-Muhtadi will be held in custody without bail until his hearing. The hearing date has not yet been set.
