Suspected dragracers charged after man drowns at Audley Weir

Two men have been charged after allegedly street racing before one of the cars crashed into a river, killing a passenger.
Police allege the men were behind the wheel of high-powered sports cars; Investigators believe these cars may have been drag racing on Audley Road in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney, at 1.15am on Wednesday.

It is understood that the Audi, allegedly driven by a 20-year-old man, “left the highway, entered the water and sank” at the Audley Weir junction.
While the driver managed to escape from the vehicle, Muhammad Kashif, a 20-year-old university student living in Casula, could not save himself. A frantic search was launched after Mr Kashif’s body was found at around 10.20am.
The Audi driver was charged with dangerous driving causing death.

An 18-year-old man, allegedly driving a Mercedes, is also accused of driving with a revoked license, not complying with high-performance vehicle restrictions, holding a phone while driving, driving without displaying his P plate and possession of a prohibited substance.
Both men were released on conditional bail and will appear at Sutherland Local Court on Thursday.
Friends on Wednesday paid tribute to Mr Kashif, who was described by the local Mount Pritchard – Southern Districts Cricket Club as full of “charisma” and “banter”.

“Our hearts break today as we share the sudden and tragic passing of our friend and teammate Muhammad Kashif,” the club wrote in a Facebook post.
“Kash, we will miss your charisma, your banter and most of all your friendship. You are gone too soon, rest in peace my dear friend, you will never be forgotten.”
Speaking to Ben Fordham on 2GB on Thursday morning, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the drag race was “absolutely part of the investigation”.
