Switzerland v Colombia; Argentina defeats Egypt 3-2 in Round of 16 games, teams, players, standings
In Atlanta: Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a remarkable World Cup campaign as they came from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic last-16 match on Tuesday and then broke down in tears at the final whistle.
While the team was trailing 2-0 after a shock defeat, goals scored in the 11th minute by Cristian Romero, Messi and Enzo Fernandez two minutes into stoppage time kept them in the competition.
Egypt were on the brink of one of the biggest defeats of the World Cup, with Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico scoring a goal each half and Messi squandering an early penalty.
The North Africans fell apart in the closing stages, but 39-year-old Messi, whose World Cup record tally now stands at 21, oversaw Argentina’s dramatic revival.
