Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro ridership rises fourfold in three years

According to official data, daily passenger traffic on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro has increased from around 35,000 to around 1.5 lakh in the last three years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the metro service up to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar as part of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2 on January 11. The extension added direct metro connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

More than 11.50 crore passengers traveled on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro between October 2022 and December 2025. In 2023, monthly passenger numbers ranged from 12 lakh to 27 lakh passengers. By 2024, this figure has increased to 27-35 lakh passengers per month. By 2025, monthly passenger numbers will cross 44 lakh passengers.

With the latest expansion, Mahatma Mandir Metro Station will have direct connectivity to Gandhinagar Railway Station. The metro network now provides access to Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir. The extension is expected to be used by employees, students and daily commuters, including visitors attending national and international programs at Mahatma Mandir and students of Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya.

Passenger numbers increased during major events like IPL matches, international cricket matches and Rath Yatra, where monthly passenger numbers rose from 1.6 lakh to 2.1 lakh. A total of 4.11 lakh passengers traveled by metro during the Coldplay concert held at Motera Stadium on January 25 and 26, 2025, officials said.

With the completion of Phase-2, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has expanded the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network to 68 km with 53 stations. The extension to Mahatma Mandir is expected to reduce private vehicle usage and traffic congestion, officials said.
