US President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Friday (local time) that Washington had identified a possible way to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia, but stressed that the proposal could only move forward if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approves it, CNN reported. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, “We think there is a way to achieve peace, he will have to approve it. I think they are getting reasonably close, but I don’t want to make any predictions.”

His remarks came amid growing controversy over the new US-drafted peace plan currently being considered by Kiev. According to CNN, the proposal is still in development and is expected to undergo significant revisions as negotiations continue.

Zeleskyy’s call for ‘national unity’

Earlier on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the country was facing one of the most challenging moments in its history as he weighed the consequences of the US offer, Al Jazeera reported. Speaking at a public meeting outside his office in Kiev, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for national unity and reiterated that he would never betray the Ukrainian people. “We are currently experiencing one of the most difficult moments in our history… Now Ukraine may face a very difficult choice; it either loses its honor or risks losing an important partner,” Zelenskyy said. “I will fight 24/7 to ensure that at least two points are not overlooked in the plan: the dignity and freedom of Ukrainians.”

What’s in Donald Trump’s new peace plan?

A new Ukrainian peace proposal being discussed within the Trump administration could include Kiev giving up territory in the eastern Donbas region and agreeing to limit its military capabilities in exchange for US-backed security guarantees, CNN reported, citing a Western official familiar with the ongoing negotiations. According to CNN, US officials stated that the proposal was still a work in progress and that a final agreement would require reconciliation between Russia and Ukraine, which have been in conflict since 2014, and would turn the situation into a full-scale war after Moscow’s invasion in 2022.

Officials emphasized that some elements currently floating around, including those supporting Moscow’s demands, are not final and are expected to change as discussions continue. According to CNN, the draft, which consists of 28 articles, was reportedly reviewed by US President Donald Trump and received his support. It represents Washington’s latest attempt to revive peace efforts and end nearly three years of conflict. Some provisions, particularly those calling for territorial concessions to Ukraine in areas not entirely under Russian control, had previously been rejected by Kiev.
