Detectives are hunting a “cowardly” sex monster who disappeared while on trial for attempting to rape a terrified 11-year-old girl. Malicious Mohammed Zahid, 59, attacked the girl in her hometown of Burnley in 2021, but she bravely managed to “get him off her”. Lancashire Police said:.
But during his trial at Burnley Crown Court, police said Zahid had “made the cowardly choice not to stick around to face justice”. After being convicted of attempted rape in his absence, he was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison and has now had a court order issued against him. arrest.
In her statement to the court, the victim’s mother said: “Before this news emerged, my daughter was quiet and withdrawn both at home and at school.
“He was staying in his room, which he normally doesn’t do. He later told the school, but he was still afraid. He was having nightmares at night and waking up. That’s why he started sleeping with me.
“After explaining this, it was as if the incident had affected him again and he became even more upset. Now that he has received justice, he has been able to move on with his life and is happy.”
On Tuesday, October 7, Zahid was given a total prison sentence of 10 and a half years, consisting of nine years and six months’ detention and a further year of extended licence, after the trial judge described him as a “dangerous criminal”.
As well as the prison sentence given to him, he was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Lancashire Police said: “Despite urging his victim to give evidence, Zahid fled halfway through the hearing and is now wanted on a warrant.
“If you see Zahid, call 999. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to email 536@lancashire.police.uk or call 101 quoting log 349 of 28 November 2022.”
DC Hannah Brown, of Lancashire Police, said: “Zahid is a dangerous person, he seized the opportunity to rape a child and tried to take it. It was only because of his bravery that he failed in his disgusting act.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to praise the victim for her courage in first reporting what happened to her and then giving evidence in court.
“Despite his denials, Zahid knew exactly what he was doing and the jury’s conclusion. I believe this is why he made the cowardly choice of not staying to face justice and chose to flee instead.
“He should know that Lancashire Police will never stop looking for him and I would urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to tell the authorities so he can face justice for what he did to his child victim.”
