Met Office names 10 areas facing 30C heatwave on Monday | Weather | News

Last week saw many temperature records broken for June as a historic heatwave gripped large parts of the UK. A new June temperature record was set on 26 June when Santon Downham in Suffolk recorded 37.3 degrees, exceeding the 37.1 degrees measured at Cavendish earlier the same day. Although temperatures have since returned to seasonal normals, this relief is expected to be temporary.

However, the upcoming heatwave is not expected to be this extreme and humidity levels are expected to remain low.

Aidan McGivern, Met Office The meteorologist said: “It won’t be that hot or humid, it won’t be that unpleasant and it won’t be that impactful. It also won’t affect the whole of the UK.”

He added: “A westerly flow of air over this high ridge is bringing frontal systems into Scotland and these fronts will ebb and flow. They will bring lots of clouds, a strong breeze and heavy and persistent rain.”

On Saturday, maximum temperatures of 27 degrees will be seen in the south and southeast. On Sunday the mercury will rise to 29C in the south and reach 27C in east Anglia.

However, the heatwave will not hit the north of England and temperatures are expected to be around 18C. The Scottish Highlands will only see the mercury reach 14C.

Monday will be another hot day, with temperatures expected to reach 31 degrees in London, Chelmsford, Rochester and Guildford.

The Met Office meteorologist said the significant contrasts seen from place to place were due to “the emergence of a high pressure area extending over the Azores near the south and south-west over the weekend”.

Other parts of the east and south of England will enjoy high temperatures of 30 degrees.
