We were not able to build pressure with dot balls, can’t repeat the mistake in WC: Mandhana

Taunton: Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana blamed India’s six-wicket defeat against England in the third T20I on their failure to bowl enough pinpoint shots and hoped to avoid repeating the same mistake in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.

England spoiled India’s show in the ICC by coming from 2-1 down in the three-match series.

“We definitely started very well with the ball (reducing England to 35 for 3). I wouldn’t take anything away from their partnership. I think they played some really good cricket shots,” Mandhana said in the post-match press conference.

After an early wobble, England recovered with a 137-run alliance for the fourth wicket between Alice Capsey (82) and Heather Knight (70 not out) to chase down the target of 181.

“Looking back, we could have put pressure on with a few dotted balls but we couldn’t. We will definitely look at this game in a way that we can do better and not repeat those mistakes in the next World Cup,” he added.
Despite the defeat, the left-handed opener took some positives from the series, such as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s return to form. Harmanpreet hit a 40-ball 56 to take India to 180 for five.

“He batted incredibly well. It’s a pleasure to watch Harman when he’s at his best. He played all over the field. Under pressure it’s a really important strike, especially when we need that strike to get us over 180.”

“I feel like everyone is doing well. It’s a good sign going forward for the World Cup, with Jemi, Harman and everyone looking really good to watch from the outside. Hopefully I can watch from the non-strikers side as well,” he said.

India will begin their World Cup campaign by facing arch-rivals Pakistan in Birmingham on June 14.

However, Mandhana refused to believe the rumors about a cricket match between India and Pakistan; Instead, the 29-year-old wanted the team to focus entirely on the World Cup.\

“We played India-Pakistan in the Commonwealth Games (2022) in Birmingham and sold out all the tickets. I think we need to be excited about not just India-Pakistan but also the T20 World Cup. We don’t need to be excited about just one match.

“He’s already very excited. I’m sure a lot of people will come and support us. I hope we can put on a show for them,” Mandhana said.
