Varanasi has launched India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered water taxi, offering eco-friendly travel between Namo Ghat and Ravidas Ghat.
India has taken a major step towards sustainable mobility with the launch of the first hydrogen-powered water taxi service in Varanasi. The service, launched by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on December 10, 2025, marks a significant leap forward in the country’s clean transportation drive. The eco-friendly water taxi is operational from the iconic Namo Ghat and currently connects to Ravidas Ghat, with expansion plans already underway.
A Milestone in Green Water Transportation
Built by Cochin Shipyard, the ship showcases modern engineering blended with environmental awareness. Designed to carry approximately 50 passengers, the water taxi operates on a hybrid electric-hydrogen system that produces zero emissions and minimal noise, making it both efficient and environmentally safe. According to reports, the boat has five hydrogen cylinders and solar panels with a capacity of 3 kW to meet its energy needs. The ship reportedly reaches a speed of over 12 km per hour and ensures a smooth journey along the Ganges.
Onboard amenities include bio-toilets, CCTV monitoring and vegetarian treats to ensure a comfortable travel experience. The service currently operates 7-8 round trips per day, offering residents and tourists a cleaner alternative to short-distance river travel.
Routes and Future Expansion
Currently, boarding can be done from two important points: Namo Ghat and Ravidas Ghat. Officials have stated plans to extend the route to Asi Ghat and Markandeya Dham; this will increase connectivity to important cultural and pilgrimage destinations along the Ganges.
Fee and Timings
The ticket price for the hydrogen water taxi is around Rs 500 per person for a one-way trip. Departures operate multiple times throughout the day, with departures approximately 1.5 to 2 hours apart.
How to Book a Water Taxi?
Online bookings can be made through reliable Varanasi boat booking platforms where passengers can verify timings and availability. Local service providers such as Jalsa Cruise Line also offer reservations via phone or WhatsApp. After payment, customers receive a digital confirmation that must be presented at the booking counter before boarding. Travelers are advised to keep an eye on the official website of the Inland Waterways Authority of India as a dedicated portal may be launched soon.
Discounts and Discounts
At this time, no special fee reductions have been announced for senior citizens, students or people with disabilities. Passengers seeking more information can visit the ticket office at Namo Ghat.
This new initiative not only strengthens Varanasi’s river transport network but also demonstrates India’s commitment to expanding clean technology across all mobility sectors.
