Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky agree to three-day ceasefire, says Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump said that there will be a prisoner exchange as well as a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine over the weekend.
In a social media post on Friday, the US president said that the ceasefire, which Trump said would last from Saturday, May 9, to Monday, May 11, coincided with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations.
Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accepted the proposal. No statement was made from either Ukraine or Russia.
“This Armistice will include the suspension of all kinetic activity as well as prison exchanges of 1,000 prisoners from each country,” Trump wrote. “I hope this will be the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly and difficult war.”
Russia, Soviet Union’s World War II. He declared an armistice for 8–9 May to coincide with commemorations of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and a military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.
Ukraine announced an open-ended ceasefire proposal that began at midnight on Tuesday, urging Russia to reciprocate.
Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustam Umerov has arrived in Miami for a series of meetings with U.S. representatives as peace talks to end Russia’s war in Ukraine have stalled in recent months, officials said Thursday.
US-brokered negotiations have reached an impasse over Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. Moscow is demanding that Kiev withdraw its troops from parts of the region it failed to capture in its four-year, large-scale occupation. Ukraine says it will not give up the territory it controls.
Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of violating separately declared ceasefires.
