Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner drew ridicule Wednesday after declaring that “disbanding ICE” was a “moderate” position after federal immigration officials shot and killed a Minneapolis woman who allegedly posed a threat to them while trying to conduct enforcement operations.

“When you send armed, undertrained amateurs into American communities with vague orders and no accountability, it’s inevitable,” the Maine Democrat said. Platner said about X: with an accompanying video. “ICE needs to be dismantled.”

“Dismantling ICE is a moderate position. Unmask these thugs, arrest them, and hold them accountable for this horror,” another X post said.

The woman who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis Wednesday morning has been identified. Minneapolis City Council Twin Cities resident Renee Nicole Good, 37. Good was shot by an ICE agent after blocking the roadway on which law enforcement officers were traveling during an operation and appearing to “use a gun on her vehicle” to shoot law enforcement officers, prompting DHS to call it an “act of domestic terrorism.”

Council members called the incident an “attack” and demanded that ICE “immediately leave our city so we can escape the chaos and violence that took the life of one of our neighbors today.” That sentiment was echoed by progressive Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who told immigration officials to “get the hell out” of his city.

“This guy doesn’t know moderation,” said Tim Graham of the Media Research Center.

“The man with a literal Nazi tattoo on his chest appears to be calling for maximum violence against ICE, but he is certainly calling for at least the weaponization of the justice system against ICE,” said Brianna Lyman, election reporter for The Federalist.

“We should love things as much as democracies love open borders,” GOP consultant Luke Thompson wrote on X.

“The same liberals who want to defund the police want to dismantle ICE,” Alabama Senate candidate Morgan Murphy wrote on X. “Absolutely not: Stand with ICE. Stand with law enforcement.”

Platner has faced criticism in the past for a tattoo on his chest that critics say resembles the “Totenkopf”, the Nazi “death’s head” symbol, but he has denied claims it represents and said it makes clear his stance on Nazism.

Platner, a progressive Democrat, also came under fire for calling himself a “communist” in recently deleted Reddit posts. “I grew old and became a communist,” he wrote in one of the posts, but later claimed it was just “internet posting.”

Following the ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis, protesters took to the streets, including in front of the Minneapolis courthouse; here in the video “ICE Get Out Now!” He was seen banging on glass doors and windows with his demands.
