A first information report was registered on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in connection with the alleged suicide of Sub-Inspector Sandeep Lather on Tuesday accusing late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and his family of corruption, officials said. The case was registered a few hours after Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini met the family at Ladhot village during the day and assured them of justice and all possible help.

After the case was registered, the family gave their consent for an autopsy and agreed to perform the last rites of the deceased police officer in his hometown Julana on Thursday afternoon. The body was transferred to Rohtak PGIMS late in the evening for autopsy, which is likely to be conducted by a panel of doctors on Thursday morning.

Lather, who was posted in Rohtak Police Cyber Cell, had committed suicide after making allegations of corruption against Puran and his family in a four-page note and video. He left behind his wife and three children, two of whom were girls.

Puran, an IPS officer who was working as Inspector General of Police Training Center in Rohtak’s Sunaria, had killed himself at his home in Chandigarh on October 7.

Rohtak Police spokesperson confirmed the registration of the FIR but refused to comment on its contents. However, a source privy to the discussions with the deceased police officer’s family claimed that there were four people, including the late IPS officer’s wife and senior IAS officer Amneet. The case names P. Kumar, his brother-in-law and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amit Amit Rattan and Puran’s personal security officer (PSO) Sushil Kumar, who was already in jail in an extortion case. The complainant is Lather’s wife.

The source said that the government also accepted the demands that the deceased be given martyr status and that his relatives be given state duties. However, Lather’s cousin Sanjay refused to comment on this matter.

Earlier, Mr. Saini visited the family in the village and expressed his condolences. A post on Mr. Trump’s official ‘X’ account said, “Today (Wednesday), upon reaching Ladhot (Rohtak), I met the family members of late ASI Sandeep Lather ji and shared their grief. I pray to God to grant peace to the departed soul and give the family strength to bear the pain in this difficult time. In this hour of grief, I assured the bereaved family of justice and appropriate action and relief to the family members.” I assured him of all possible assistance.” Saini.

Former Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda also reached Ladhot to express his condolences and demanded a thorough investigation into the entire incident involving two suicide cases in Haryana. “The government should conduct this investigation under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge to ensure that no criminal is spared and innocent people are not involved in crime,” he said. Indian National Lok Dal national president Abhay Chautala also visited the village to pay his respects to the soul of the deceased.

Besides political leaders, many locals from surrounding villages also came to pay their last respects to the police. Rajesh Dahiya, a resident of Nigana village, said he had known Mr Lather for more than a decade and came across him as an “honest” and “helpful” cop. “He made a great sacrifice, laying down his life for the sake of truth and justice,” Mr. Dahiya said.
